Nigerian-American teenager Ugochukwu wins Formula 3 title

Ugo Ugochukwu secured the 2026 Formula 3 title on Sunday, despite entering the Madring weekend as an underdog. Cambridge-based Campos Racing driver Ugochukwu and Trident Racing’s Freddie Slater were the two main title contenders throughout the summer based on their consistent performances in feature races. In the initial seven rounds of the season, Slater managed to finish on the podium in six feature races, while Ugochukwu achieved five podium finishes.

No other drivers managed more than two top-three finishes in the season. Ugochukwu, spearheading Audi’s new Driver Development Programme, entered the final round at Madring with a 15-point lead over Slater, an American 19-year-old. The 18-year-old British driver finished second in the sprint race, but gradually slipped down the order from pole position in the feature race and retired due to a technical issue.

Slater, who qualified 17th and 8th, also had a disappointing race as he failed to score any points in the event. With Slater leaving the race with a technical issue and Ugochukwu finishing second in the sprint and fourth in the first feature race, Ugochkuwu secured the title by scoring more points in the final race. Slater, an American, described the race as "quite difficult with the dirty air to overtake Tuukka" and admitted that he couldn't get close enough to the top two.

Ugochukwu, however, expressed relief and satisfaction with his win, stating that the hard work throughout the season had finally paid off.
