Murcia wildlife centre treats nearly 4,400 animals in 2025

In 2025, the El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre in Murcia treated nearly 4,400 injured animals, marking a 41% increase from the previous year. The facility, which has been operating since 1984, has carried out over 34,000 interventions since 2009, saving numerous vulnerable species. Over 80% of the animals brought to the centre were reported by local citizens during their exploration of Murcia's natural areas.

This year, 1,356 animals were successfully released back into the wild. Birds accounted for more than 87% of the recorded treatments, with 2,323 birds treated, an increase of 869 compared to the previous year. The most common species were the common swift and the pallid swift. Among reptiles, the spur-thighed tortoise was the most treated, with 292 interventions.

Among mammals, the European hedgehog received the most attention, with 66 animals treated. The centre's success is attributed to the Murcia citizens who bring in the animals. Additionally, the regional government is set to invest €700,000 to modernize and expand the facility, including a specialized area for sea turtles. The El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre also conducts environmental education activities for locals, with 14,155 visitors in 2025, including 9,400 in the first half of the year.
