‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Trailer: David Corenswet Toughs and Smiles His Way to the NFL as Last Draft Pick John Tuggle

David Corenswet, who previously portrayed Superman on the big screen, will take on a different kind of inspiring role in the upcoming film "Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story." The trailer for the movie was released on Sunday, just in time for the start of the 2026 NFL season.

For those familiar with NFL lore, "Mr. Irrelevant" is the playful nickname given to the player who is the last selected in the NFL Draft each year. In 1983, this title belonged to John Tuggle, a talented running back who played for the Cal Golden Bears and was drafted by the New York Giants. Tuggle's journey from a college athlete to an NFL draft pick is marked by his resilient attitude, undeniable charm, and unparalleled work ethic, which helped him secure a spot on the Giants' roster despite the odds.

However, Tuggle's story took a tragic turn when he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite this devastating news, Tuggle remained determined to keep his spot on the team, even while undergoing chemotherapy. His fight against the disease inspired his teammates, and as a testament to his resilience, they honored him by wearing his jersey number, No. 38, on their helmets during the 1986 season.

Tragically, Tuggle passed away in August 1986, just weeks before the start of a season that would culminate in the Giants winning Super Bowl XXI.

Corenswet will play the role of John Tuggle alongside Michael Shannon, who portrays the legendary Giants coach Bill Parcells, as well as Isabel May and David Krumholtz. The film was directed and produced by Jonathan Levine, based on a script penned by Nick Santora. "Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story" is set to be released by Paramount in theaters on Christmas Day, promising an uplifting tale of an NFL underdog who faced adversity with courage and determination.
