Mama's Family Starred A Character Who Had Died A Year Before In A TV Movie

Eunice Harper Higgins originated as a character in a series of sketches on The Carol Burnett Show, titled "The Family." These sketches were not part of a single narrative, but rather felt like two separate universes for the Harper family. The sketches were well-received, and Carol Burnett discussed doing them "at least once a month."

The success of these sketches led to the development of a TV movie, "Eunice," which aired on CBS in 1982. This film, however, diverged significantly from the original sketches, focusing on the Harper family's dysfunction and culminating in Eunice dealing with her mother's death.

Betty White portrayed one of Eunice's most memorable roles as Ellen, despite the serious nature of the material. The critical acclaim for the movie sparked discussions about a spin-off series centered around Mama Harper. Vicki Lawrence, who played the role of Ellen, expressed her reluctance to fully commit to the Mama's Family spin-off, fearing it might become her sole role.

However, after encouragement from Burnett, Lawrence embarked on the journey of Mama Harper, which spanned seven years and six seasons. The series even continued after a network switch.

Despite the long run, Lawrence's final television role was in "The Cool Kids," a show set in a retirement community, which she found amusing given the contrast from her Mama Harper character. Looking back on Mama Harper, Lawrence considers her "the only character I ever played where it's like watching another person." She shared that she doesn't even think of it as "me," emphasizing her love and appreciation for the well-written role.
