Malaysia squander lead to finish fourth in Junior Asia Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia failed to capitalize on a two-goal lead, ultimately losing 4-2 to Pakistan in the third-place playoff of the Junior Asia Cup in Inner Mongolia, China on today's date. Despite this loss, the Malaysian junior team managed to earn a spot in next year's Junior World Cup. The national junior team opened the scoring in the 11th minute through captain Adam Ashraf Johari, who doubled the lead two minutes later with a goal from Shafiq Ammar Fahmi Suzaini.

However, Pakistan, who had previously defeated Malaysia 5-2 in the group stage, managed to make a remarkable comeback in the final two quarters. Pakistani striker Rana Abdul Sami netted a goal in the 34th minute, followed by Muhammad Shaheer scoring in the 47th, Waleed Rana finding the back of the net in the 52nd, and a final goal from Pakistan's Waleed Rana in the 56th minute sealed the match for Pakistan.

This result marks Malaysia's third consecutive finish in fourth place, following their positions in the years 2023 and 2024. The Malaysian team achieved three wins - defeating Kazakhstan 8-0, Bangladesh 4-2, and China 1-0 - and suffered three defeats, losing twice to Pakistan (5-2, 4-2) and once to India (3-1). Meanwhile, the Malaysian women's team did not qualify for the Junior World Cup after falling 2-1 to Bangladesh on Saturday.
