The story of Yotsuba&! begins with a young girl, Koiwai Yotsuba, and her father Yōsuke arriving in town during the summer. The manga then follows Yotsuba’s everyday life, with each chapter focusing on small, idyllic moments. The title, Yotsuba to, translates to "Yotsuba and," using "to" (and) from the Japanese. Yotsuba's adventures range from playing at the park to going shopping, camping trips, and even riding a hot-air balloon.

The surrounding characters, both ordinary and peculiar, keep a watchful eye on Yotsuba, who is known for her unusual behavior that both bewilders and inspires them.

The series' popularity can be attributed to the time it was serialized, as "slow life" was gaining traction in Japan. In addition, the attention to detail in the artwork, such as camera angles that neither resemble a direct perspective from Yotsuba nor an adult's view, helps create an emotional connection with the reader. This unique artistic style, along with the highly realistic backgrounds and symbolic characterization, protects the manga's distinct worldview.

Yotsuba&! has resonated with readers across generations, selling over 15 million volumes in Japan and 3.5 million in translation overseas. Its success is partly due to Yotsuba Studio, a special studio headed by Satomi Hideki, which handles every aspect of the manga's production and aims for a broader audience beyond the traditional otaku demographic. This strategy has led to the manga's enduring popularity and widespread recognition.
