LOCAL ELECTIONS 2026: Zille is targeting the ANC’s heartland in Joburg, but voters are doubtful

In Johannesburg's upcoming 2026 elections, DA leader Helen Zille is targeting the historically ANC stronghold of Soweto, which has always been a critical region for the party's victory. With over 1.2 million residents, Soweto is believed to be home to nearly 500,000 voters who could help the DA secure a majority or a strong coalition position. Zille's campaign in Soweto began in September 2025, and her efforts aim to expand the DA's loyal but small following in the sprawling region.

Despite the party's pockets of support in Soweto, voters remain skeptical of the DA's ability to deliver. Former Land Party member Maureen Mnisi joined the DA over a decade ago, and now serves as the DA's Ward 10 PR councillor in Protea South. Some residents still struggle to trust the DA due to its historical association with white voters, but many are increasingly open to considering other parties due to the failures of the ANC and other parties.

While some DA supporters in Soweto remain firm in their loyalty, others acknowledge the party's growing presence in the area. A recent Ipsos poll shows the ANC at 31% and the DA at 27%, with the SRF survey indicating a significant increase in DA support. However, the upcoming elections are expected to see low voter turnout, making Zille's Soweto campaign crucial for the DA's success.
