Laboma demolition: Laboma Director calls for halt, says over 3,000 workers at risk

The director of Laboma Beach, Daniel M. K. Okpoti, has called for an immediate halt to the ongoing demolition, citing the severe impact on businesses, investors, and the 3,000+ workers employed in the area. Okpoti described the demolition as "really disturbing" and expressed disappointment over the loss of livelihoods for those who have invested heavily in the location.

He argued that the businesses at Laboma Beach have generated employment opportunities for thousands of people, a crucial factor in the daily income of many residents. Okpoti urged the government to reconsider the demolition and find a solution that balances environmental concerns with the preservation of businesses, investments, and jobs.

The demolition, which began following a 21-day ultimatum issued by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council, aims to reclaim waterways, remove unauthorized structures, and address flooding issues in the Greater Accra Region. However, Okpoti questioned the extent of the demolition, noting that it had expanded beyond the initially identified area and suggested alternative solutions such as raising the low bridge instead of demolishing businesses.
