Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim called for a more equitable global financing system during the BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi, emphasizing that no country should be forced to choose between repaying debts and fulfilling responsibilities to its citizens. He pointed out that many nations struggle to pay debts or risk high interest while spending more on interest than on education for the younger generation or public health care.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, stressed that financing must align with goals and needs, and that providing basic needs and public amenities should not cause a country to bear a burdensome debt. He also highlighted the role of commercial capital when lent under just and fair terms, and urged progress in initiatives like the New Development Bank, regional bailout mechanisms, and potential Islamic finance markets.
