Iran says one dead, three injured after ship struck in Strait of Hormuz

On Sunday, a ship was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one fatality and three injuries, according to local Iranian authorities. The merchant vessel encountered the incident around 5:00 am this morning, situated off the coasts of Hengam and Qeshm islands. Qeshm city governor Amir Teymouri disclosed the details to state TV, although the origin of the strike remained unspecified.

Multiple explosions were reported overnight near Qeshm, the largest island within the Hormuz Strait. This tragic event transpired just prior to a scheduled meeting between Iran and Gulf states in Oman, a neighboring nation also bordering the Strait. The meeting aimed to address the contentious blockade of the waterway, which holds immense significance for global oil and gas commerce.

Control over the Strait has emerged as a pivotal point of contention in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, which has persisted for six months. Following retaliatory attacks by the United States and Israel that initiated the war on February 28, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait, a route that was previously open and unrestricted before the conflict erupted.

In response, Iran now mandates vessels to acquire authorization to navigate the strait, citing security and sovereignty concerns. Additionally, Iran is contemplating imposing service fees on ships that do not comply, while frequently targeting vessels that fail to adhere to the regulations. Meanwhile, the United States sporadically launches airstrikes on the Iranian coast, aiming to challenge Tehran's authority over the Strait.
