India’s top palm oil buyer AWL sources 70pc of its palm oil from Malaysia, and plans to keep it that way

NEW DELHI, September 13 — India's leading food and consumer goods company, AWL Agri Business Ltd, has announced its intention to continue sourcing the majority of its palm oil requirements from Malaysia. The company, which is also the largest importer of palm oil in India, produces approximately 1.5 million tonnes of palm oil annually, of which roughly 70% originates from Malaysia.

The oil is transported to AWL's facilities across India, where it is refined and utilized in the production of a range of consumer goods and oleochemicals. The managing director and CEO of AWL Agri Business Ltd, Shrikant Kanhere, recently met with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 18th Brics Leaders' Summit in New Delhi.

During the meeting, the focus was on AWL's operations in India and the future of the palm oil trade. Shrikant emphasized that the company's exports to Malaysia primarily involve branded consumer products such as basmati rice and wheat flour, with plans to expand these offerings in the future. He also clarified that the recent meeting with the Prime Minister was not aimed at securing export approvals, but rather to strengthen the partnership between AWL and Malaysia by sharing AWL's footprint and the company's long-term outlook for the Indian edible oil market.
