IND Vs AFG 1st T20I: Abhishek Sharma Leads Chase As India Crush Afghanistan By 7 Wickets

New Delhi witnessed an impressive display of batting prowess from India as they convincingly defeated Afghanistan by seven wickets in the first T20 International at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. Chasing a target of 157, India raced through the required runs in just 13.4 overs, thanks to the explosive performance of opener Abhishek Sharma.

The 25-year-old Sharma demolished the Afghan attack with a sensational half-century, scoring an aggressive 82 runs off just 32 balls. He relied on seven sixes and seven fours to propel India into a strong lead.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, were restricted to a disappointing total of 156/8 in their 20 overs. They found themselves in trouble at 43/5, but Afghan opener Azmatullah Omarzai prevented further humiliation with an unbeaten knock of 64 off 44 balls. Omarzai's gritty performance, along with a crucial partnership of 79 runs with Mohammad Nabi's 33 runs, helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total.

However, India's bowlers delivered a clinical performance with Arshdeep Singh being the standout performer, claiming three crucial wickets for just 19 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy also chipped in with a wicket each.

The match also saw Sanju Samson return to India's playing XI, despite the fans' disappointment after his absence in the previous game. Young and talented 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, however, was left out of the team. Despite his efforts, Samson could only manage 10 runs from eight balls before being dismissed. The victory not only gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series but also showcases the dominance of their batting lineup. The second T20I is scheduled to be played at the same venue on September 15.
