Upon arriving in Southampton, the author settled into a Sapphire Veranda Suite with a walk-in closet, veranda, and butler service. She was amazed at how easy everything was, from planning the trip to navigating the ship. Cruising allowed her to avoid the usual logistics of travel, such as arranging flights, trains, and hotel bookings. Once unpacked, she didn't touch her suitcase again for nine nights.

The food on board was a pleasant surprise. Instead of the infamous buffet with mediocre dishes, Crystal Serenity offered innovative dining experiences, like Umi Uma (by Nobu Matsuhisa) and Osteria d Ovidio. The author found herself preferring the onboard dining to exploring local cuisine in the ports of call.

During her nine-night voyage, she enjoyed a variety of activities on board, including classes, live performances, a spa, pools, a movie theater, and a casino. She even participated in a blackjack tournament and finished third. The author found herself relaxing more than she usually does during trips, likely due to the gentle motion of the sea.

While she loved the convenience and pace of cruising, the author did miss the opportunity for more authentic cultural experiences in the ports of call. She acknowledged that the brief stops allowed limited time for wandering, spontaneous interactions, and truly immersing herself in the destinations. Overall, her first luxury cruise expanded her understanding of travel and revealed the appeal of this unique form of exploration.
