How Embu violence tests govt credibility on security ahead of 2027 polls

Nairobi, Kenya – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s political meeting in Embu was disrupted by violence as per DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, who alleged the incident was part of a strategy to influence the political alignment of the Mt Kenya region in the 2027 General Election. Gachagua accused the administration of Raila Odinga’s party of attempting to establish a political presence in Mt Kenya East while undermining the region’s traditional unity.

Kindiki was reportedly tasked with mobilizing residents of Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties by October 25, 2026, according to Gachagua. The former Deputy President claimed that political meetings were being funded with cash to sway residents, which he believed was more detrimental than helpful. Gachagua argued that residents should not be required to abandon their businesses, farms, and homes for such meetings.

He emphasized that the government should focus on improving infrastructure, clean water, education, and healthcare. Following the violent disruption at Nembure Stadium, where one person was killed, several injured, and six vehicles torched, Gachagua condemned the violence but also criticized the government for employing excessive force against protesters.

He further warned Kindiki against any attempts to divide the Mt Kenya region, asserting that such efforts would ultimately fail.
