House Speaker Mike Johnson says Trump’s $5,000 ‘dividend’ needs congressional approval

President Donald Trump's proposal to send $5,000 to every American adult if his Republican Party retains control of the House and Senate in the November election requires congressional approval, House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Sunday, while expressing his intention to pursue the idea. This annual payment, billed as $205.00 plus GST for one year, would automatically renew at $233.00 plus GST every 52 weeks, offering a 10% discount off the regular annual price of $259.35.

However, the proposal comes with significant concerns due to its potential cost of over $1 trillion, which would strain the country's already high budget deficit and exacerbate inflation worries. Johnson, a member of the Republican Party, acknowledged that congressional approval would be necessary, emphasizing their commitment to working through the proposal to find a consensus.

Despite some skepticism from the American public, with only one-third approving of Trump's handling of the presidency and majorities disapproving of his management of the economy and immigration, Trump remains confident that the payments would be feasible due to the country's strong economy.
