Heckingbottom exit inevitable after months of decline

Preston North End's football manager, Paul Heckingbottom, has been dismissed following months of declining performance. The club's poor form began during the second half of the previous season, with 17 losses out of 27 Championship matches and only five wins. Despite initial optimism after back-to-back wins in January, the team's fortunes quickly deteriorated, leaving them 13 points behind the top six by the campaign's end.

Despite investing approximately £15 million in new players, including a record deal for Alfie Devine, results failed to improve. The team has conceded an average of two goals per game across all competitions, indicating significant defensive issues. Nine different defenders started the first four league games, highlighting the lack of consistency.

Heckingbottom, who managed the team for two years and a month, has won 30 of his 109 matches, with 38 draws and 41 defeats. The new manager will face a challenging task of rebuilding the squad, which is already playing catch-up, with little room for error. The priority now is preserving the club's Championship status, crucial for stability and renewed ambition, especially with new ownership on the horizon.
