EPL: Awoniyi sent off as Brighton thrash Coventry 5-0

Taiwo Awoniyi, a Nigerian international playing for Coventry in the English Premier League, received his first red card in a recent home match against Brighton. Awoniyi sustained the red card during the second half of the 5-0 victory, after a violent elbow-on contact with Maxim De Cuyper. The incident occurred while both players were challenging for an aerial ball, with replays revealing that Awoniyi's elbow made clear contact with De Cuyper's face.

Despite VAR review, the on-field decision by referee Tony Harrington stood. After the game, it was revealed that Harrington's assistant observed, "He has caught him in his face with his elbow." This incident resulted in a three-match ban for Awoniyi, meaning he will miss Coventry's next three matches, including a trip to his former club Nottingham Forest, a Carabao Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa, and the Premier League game against Newcastle after the international break.

Frank Onyeka, a fellow Nigerian, was also substituted during the match after injuring himself, marking his second Premier League start that season.
