EPL: Awoniyi sent off as Brighton thrash Coventry 5-0

In a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League, Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi received a red card early in the second half. The Nigerian forward was shown the straight red card for an off-the-ball incident in the 53rd minute, just two minutes after Brighton took a second goal to extend their halftime lead.

Awoniyi's attempted tackle on Brighton's Maxim De Cuyper resulted in the defender being fouled, leading to the referee's decision. This marked Awoniyi's first red card in the Premier League and his second in club football, making him the 11th Nigerian player to be sent off in the Premier League, the first since Semi Ajayi in 2023.

Brighton extended their winless and pointless campaign with additional goals from Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk, and Yasin Ayari. The defeat saw Coventry suffer their fourth consecutive loss, marking their first time in history without scoring a goal or point in their first four league matches.
