EC to review electoral boundaries nationwide if Parliament approves more Sabah, Sarawak seats

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 13 — The Election Commission (EC) will conduct a review of electoral constituency boundaries, contingent upon amendments to the Federal Constitution, according to EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun. The EC has taken note of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent remarks regarding proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution aimed at increasing the number of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak.

This proposed increase in parliamentary seats will also encompass the electoral constituencies in Peninsular Malaysia, with the aim of maintaining a proportional representation ratio for Sabah and Sarawak, as opposed to the current situation. Speaking in a statement today, Ramlan elaborated that the EC will undertake a review of electoral constituency boundaries within the three designated study units, contingent upon the approval of constitutional amendments.

He further indicated that the EC would issue additional clarification once a formal decision had been made and there were relevant developments to announce to the public.
