Controversial gender minister nominee steps down amid criticism

Rep. Yong Hye-in of the Basic Income Party has resigned from her nomination to become gender equality and family minister, concluding a two-week period of controversy surrounding her decision to hold both a parliamentary seat and the cabinet position. During a press conference at the National Assembly, Yong stated, "I have decided to step down as the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, relinquishing my personal commitment to establishing a gender-equal society for all under the Lee Jae Myung administration."

She attributed her withdrawal to opposition within the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) as the key reason. Yong explained, "Cabinet members are expected to bridge the parliament and government to build consensus. With even the ruling party expressing concern, I concluded that fulfilling the duties in reality would be impossible."

Additionally, Yong emphasized the importance of maintaining the spirit of solidarity among the DPK, Basic Income Party, and the broader democratic-progressive bloc. She also leveled criticism at the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), accusing it of abandoning principles.
