Chris Rock says ‘Misty Green’ challenges Hollywood’s ‘positive’ roles for Black women

TORONTO - Comedian Chris Rock expressed his thoughts on Hollywood's portrayal of Black women during a panel discussion at the Toronto International Film Festival. Rock, who wrote, directed, and stars in the film "Misty Green," said the movie challenges the trend of depicting Black women as relentlessly positive characters. He highlighted the central role of Rosalind Eleazar's character, who is complex and flawed, as part of his effort to offer more compelling roles to Black women.

"Misty Green," about a struggling actress trying to regain her Hollywood momentum, is Rock's most dramatic project yet and features a Black woman leading the story. Rock, a critic of Hollywood's historical pay disparities based on race and gender, also touched upon the current obsession with fame, image, and money, suggesting that people's concerns have shifted from substance to appearance.
