Chinese leader pledges to help Brics nations with AI and smart manufacturing

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Sunday that China intends to assist Brics nations in developing and implementing open-source large language models as well as building smart manufacturing facilities. Addressing the second day of the Brics summit in New Delhi, he highlighted these as two among five crucial initiatives aimed at stimulating economic expansion and technological advancement in the Global South.

According to state news agency Xinhua, Xi also proposed that Beijing would provide training to young professionals from other member states in cutting-edge technology and innovation. Furthermore, he issued a call for unity and collaboration within the bloc to oppose geopolitical conflicts and disruptive elements, which he claimed were disrupting the stability of supply and industrial chains.

"A world without rules is like an intersection without traffic lights, where chaos and disorder would be inevitable," he remarked, as reported by Xinhua. Xi further emphasized that global rules should be co-created and applied uniformly to all countries without discrimination. "The logic of might makes right should have been abandoned a long time ago," he stated.

The Brics bloc has experienced rapid growth in recent years and is now regarded as one of the most potent advocates for the Global South as the United States exerts growing influence on the global stage. The session was chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who cautioned that using technology and critical minerals as tools of coercion could impede the collective industrialization that Brics seeks to achieve.

He stressed the importance of inclusivity in technology adoption. "The weaponization of technology and critical minerals can hinder our shared progress. Therefore, we have emphasized inclusivity in the adoption of technology," he said, without specifically mentioning China or the United States.
