Chimamanda Adichie says she does not want returning to Nigeria after son’s death

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has expressed that she no longer feels the same about Nigeria after the loss of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu. The author revealed her feelings during an interview with The New York Times, stating, "My feelings toward Nigeria have changed. I do not want to go back to Nigeria." Nkanu passed away in December 2025 due to a medical emergency at Euracare in Nigeria.

Prior to his death, Adichie had raised allegations of medical negligence related to her son's treatment at the hospital. The circumstances surrounding Nkanu's death are currently under investigation, with the hospital accused of destroying evidence by cremating the child's remains. Adichie emphasized that her children could be the only reason she would consider returning to Nigeria, as her daughter still considers Nigeria a "happy place."

Despite the loss, Adichie acknowledged the profound impact Nigeria had on her identity and writing, but the tragedy has altered her connection to the country.
