Carney pushes idea of making Canada ‘associate member’ of EU, WSJ reports

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney is proposing a closer relationship with the European Union by potentially becoming an "associate member," according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The EU has not previously been flexible about membership rules but is reportedly open to the idea of granting Canada a new status. This move comes as Canada's trade war with the United States has intensified, prompting the country to seek stronger ties with other trading partners.

The EU and Canada are discussing measures to facilitate the movement of goods, services, and workers in strategic sectors like energy, AI, defense, and critical minerals. Additionally, they are exploring infrastructure projects such as underwater cables, data centers, and satellite networks to support Canadian energy exports to the EU.

Canada has also been in talks with EU leaders, especially French President Emmanuel Macron, about visa-free travel for Canadians. While a closer relationship between Canada and the EU is possible, it may face challenges, particularly given past issues with trade agreements that have encountered resistance within Europe.
