Canadian boxing icon George Chuvalo, known for his two Ali fights, dies at 89

George Chuvalo, a legendary heavyweight boxer known for his unbeatable chin and two memorable bouts with Muhammad Ali, has passed away at the age of 89. Chuvalo, who trained at Sully’s Boxing Gym in Toronto, was a Canadian amateur champion, held the national title as a pro for nearly two decades, and was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world.

He had an impressive pro career from 1956 to 1978, with a record of 73 wins, 18 losses, and 2 draws, including 64 knockouts. Chuvalo's most famous fights were against Ali in 1966 and 1972, where he showcased his resilience and skill despite taking on the best of his era. The victories in these fights solidified his status as a Canadian icon and a global boxing legend.

Despite the immense pain of losing three sons and his first wife to drugs and suicide, Chuvalo remained humble and loving, known for his friendly demeanor and storytelling. Even in retirement, he was remembered for his extraordinary fighting spirit and unwavering dedication to the sport.
