Attack on Iranian freighter by projectile kills one

An Iranian freighter was struck by an "unidentified projectile" in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the death of one crew member and injuries to four others, according to state-run news agency IRNA. The Sunday morning attack took place near Hengam Island, located on the Iranian side of the strategic waterway. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had initially reported a similar attack on a vessel in the strait the previous night, though it was uncertain if the incidents were related.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in recent times as both nations vie for control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has consistently attempted to obstruct traffic through the strait via threats and attacks on ships. In retaliation for Iranian missile strikes on commercial vessels, the US military has started targeting Iranian commercial ships under President Donald Trump's "tanker-for-tanker" policy.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a crucial route for oil, liquefied natural gas, and fertilizer exports from Gulf countries. Due to the blockade and rising prices in the US, Trump is facing considerable domestic political pressure as the country heads into the critical midterm elections in November.
