Atlanta Falcons Continue to Deal With Quarterback Injuries Ahead of Week 1

The Atlanta Falcons find themselves grappling with quarterback injuries as they prepare for the upcoming Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a disappointing 2025 season, the team underwent coaching changes and added two new quarterbacks to their roster. However, the quarterback position has been plagued by injuries, leaving the team's prospects uncertain.

Initially, it was believed that Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa would compete for the starting quarterback role in Week 1. Unfortunately, both players have been sidelined due to injuries, forcing the Falcons to seek an alternative solution. Cooper Rush, an undrafted free agent, is set to take on the starting quarterback duties against the Steelers.

Despite experiencing back spasms recently, Rush is expected to be fully fit for the game and showcased his skills during the preseason, completing 30 of 48 passes for 254 yards, including a touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Tagovailoa, too, is battling a back injury, while Michael Penix Jr. is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered during the previous season. To address the quarterback situation, the Falcons have turned to undrafted free agent Jack Strand, who will serve as the backup quarterback for the team.

With a roster brimming with young talent, including running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London, and tight end Kyle Pitts, the Falcons aim to make a push for the postseason in their first appearance since 2017. The success of their season will largely hinge on whether Cooper Rush can make an impression during his Week 1 start against the Steelers.
