Asante Kotoko put 11-year Heart of Lions hoodoo to bed

Asante Kotoko claimed a 2-1 victory over Heart of Lions in a Ghana Premier League Matchday Two clash, ending a 11-year winless streak against the Lions. The Porcupine Warriors had not won against Lions since April 2015, when they secured a 4-0 triumph at the same venue. Heart of Lions had previously dominated the fixture, including a 3-1 win in their most recent meeting in January 2026.

Kotoko took an early lead in Kumasi, with Emmanuel Mamah scoring in the 27th minute after Patrick Asiedu's low cross into the box. Danlad Ibrahim made crucial saves early on and again before halftime, while Yamoah prevented Hubert Gyau from extending Kotoko's lead. Kotoko sealed their second goal in the 63rd minute, with Richard Boadu's excellent long pass finding Mamah, who then set up Isaac Opoku Agyemang for the second goal.

Despite Heart of Lions pulling one back with a late penalty in the 92nd minute, converted by Francis Odoom, Kotoko held on for the win. The victory provided a significant boost for Kotoko in their campaign and finally put an end to their long winless run against Lions. It also eased pressure on head coach Eric Tinkler, who had faced criticism over poor pitches.

Kotoko will now travel to face FC Samartex 1996 on matchday three, while Lions are winless in two matches after a recent draw against Aduana FC. They are set to host Swedru All Blacks in Kpando next.
