Are CDs really making a comeback? Or are we misreading something?

CD sales are experiencing a resurgence, though the extent of this comeback is subject to debate. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, US CD sales have increased by 60 per cent, a figure highlighted by TechCrunch. However, Luminate, a music consumption tracker, reports a more modest 16 per cent rise. Regardless of the figures, this resurgence has triggered comparisons to vinyl's recent revival.

The growth of CD sales is largely attributed to a new wave of physical media collectors, particularly among younger audiences. Artists and record labels are capitalizing on this trend by releasing multiple versions of albums, enticing superfans to purchase all of them. For instance, BTS's ARIRANG album has been launched in 11 different CD versions, while Paul McCartney is offering six variations of his latest work, The Boys of Dungeon Lane. Similarly, Madonna's Confessions II is available in four formats.

This strategy has proven effective, with these albums often debuting at the top of music charts. However, Bob Lefsetz argues that the focus on percentage increases rather than absolute numbers can be misleading. The reported 16 per cent increase from Luminate translates to 16.3 million units, a figure that may not seem significant. Furthermore, when K-pop sales are excluded, the growth rate drops to 6.7 per cent.

Despite the hype, the Canadian market does not appear to be experiencing a CD boom. Canadian sales have only increased by 0.8 per cent compared to the same period last year, with LPs still leading in physical music format sales. The resurgence of CDs may be more about nostalgia and collectability than genuine preference for physical media. Although CDs remain a viable option, especially for high-resolution audio enthusiasts, the rise of streaming services offering lossless streams poses a significant challenge.
