America’s Health Care System Is So Screwed That Patients Are Flying to China for Cancer Treatment

The United States healthcare system is a source of frustration and hardship for many, leading some patients to travel abroad for treatment. Shanghai, China, has emerged as a prominent destination for cancer patients seeking care, as the nation's robust biotechnology sector has transformed an experimental US treatment into a thriving industry.

This therapy, known as chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR-T), represents a personalized immunotherapy approach where a patient's own white blood cells are genetically modified to target specific proteins found in cancer cells.

Initially developed by US biotechnology firms, the high cost and limited supply of CAR-T treatment in the United States has resulted in shortages and unaffordable expenses for patients, with prices ranging between $150,000 to $850,000. In contrast, China offers significantly more affordable options, with the same therapy costing between $150,000 to $230,000.

This cost disparity, coupled with China's efficient and speedy delivery of the treatment, has prompted medical tourism from the US to China. Sairah Ahmed, a director at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, highlights that China has effectively industrialized CAR-T cell therapy, making it a more accessible and economically viable option for patients.

While the process of receiving CAR-T therapy in the US can span over three weeks, and involves considerable recovery time, China's labs near Shanghai can produce the treatment in mere days. However, it's crucial to note that CAR-T cell therapy is not a universal solution for all types of cancer and is generally reserved for patients whose treatment options have exhausted.

The therapy also entails months of recovery and regular check-ups from a variety of medical specialists. Nevertheless, for patients seeking alternative treatment options, China's CAR-T services present a more affordable and expedient avenue.
