All things Avalanche Rookie Recap

The Colorado Avalanche revealed their rookie roster ahead of training camp, which kicks off on September 17th. The practice session took place on September 9th at Family Sports Center, featuring a mix of rookies and experienced players. Teddy Lechner, Noah Jettelson, Evan Friesen, Saige Weinstein, and Connor Kelley were added to the Avs' Rookie Faceoff roster. However, Weinstein and Kelley will not participate due to injury.

During the practice, some line combinations started to form, with Beckett Hamilton often on TJ Hughes' right wing. Center ice battle drills were also introduced, possibly influenced by the new Colorado Eagles head coach, Jussi Ahokas. The practice also focused on improving the special teams units, with a 5v4 practice and a unique 3v2 drill.

In their first game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Avalanche won 7-2. TJ Hughes, Taylor Makar, and Beckett Hamilton formed the top line, which opened the scoring. Matthew DiMarsico, Shawn Carrier, Cooper Gay, and Kalder Varga also scored. Alex Gagne had a standout performance, recording a Gordie Howe hat trick and an assist while wearing the captain's "C". Ilya Nabokov was solid in net, protecting the goal during the penalty kill.

The following day, the Avalanche faced the Vegas Golden Knights and suffered a 6-5 loss. The lineup was thinner than the previous game, with T.J. Hughes and Taylor Makar missing, along with Alex Gagne. Sean Behrens was called in on defense, and the team ran an 11-man lineup. The Avalanche built a 4-2 lead in the first two periods, but Vegas evened the score at 4-4 in the third.

The game went into overtime, where Nikita Prishchepov scored a penalty kill breakaway to give Colorado a 5-4 lead. However, Vegas capitalized on a power play and scored two more goals, securing a 6-5 victory. Beckett Hamilton scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
