Generative AI could simplify holiday planning for travelers who find the process overwhelming, according to new research from the University of Surrey. The study, published in the Journal of Travel Research, explores how AI can assist in organizing information, comparing options, and completing vacation plans. By acting as "cognitive scaffolding," AI takes on part of the coordination work, allowing travelers to remain in control.

The benefits were particularly significant for those who struggle with planning, as AI made vacation planning feel achievable rather than a task to be delayed or abandoned. Generative AI supports travelers in three main ways: by providing structure, helping focus, and managing details, freeing users to compare options and make judgments.

This redistribution of mental work rather than removal can make the demanding decision-making process more manageable, potentially making travel planning inclusive for diverse thinking styles, including neurodivergent individuals.
