Abu Dhabi Book Fair opens with Juan Carlos memoir and book on emirate’s architectural heritage

The 35th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair commenced on Sunday at the Adnec Centre, featuring former Spanish monarch Juan Carlos I. He inaugurated the Arabic version of his memoir, Reconciliation, citing his desire to clarify Spain's democratic transition. Juan Carlos co-authored the book with French writer Laurence Debray over a two-year period.

The opening day was centered around the theme "Turn the Page, Read the World," encompassing a six-day schedule. The fair also marked the launch of "Archive of Tomorrow: Modern Heritage in Abu Dhabi," a photographic history of the capital's architecture, which the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi released as its inaugural publication focusing on the city's modern heritage.

A unique feature at the event was the "Blind Date with a Book" stand, which offered readers the chance to purchase a selection of books without knowing the title or author, focusing instead on the book's content and readability. The stall manager, Hanna Leona, aimed to alleviate the overwhelming choice often faced by visitors and encourage them to engage with literature.

Bookstalls like Al Ummah Bookshop, which has transitioned from physical to primarily online operations, found the fair invaluable for maintaining a personal connection with readers. Ibrahim Ismail, a representative from the shop, emphasized the importance of these interactions in understanding customer preferences and ensuring continued success.

The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair concluded on Friday at the Adnec Centre, offering free entry to the public program upon online registration.
