48 Engineer Regiment demolishes illegal structures at Laboma to clear flood-prone areas

Soldiers from the 48 Engineer Regiment in Ghana's military are engaged in a demolition operation at Laboma, a location close to La Beach Hotel, to eliminate unauthorized structures and clear obstacles along the estuary and coastline. This action follows a 21-day ultimatum issued by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council on August 7, urging residents and businesses within the designated buffer zone to leave the area.

The structures at risk during this operation include the well-known Pink Flamingo lounge, which officials claim is situated within the protected lagoon zone. Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, who visited the site prior to the demolition, announced that the government will proceed with demolishing any structures whose inhabitants do not comply with the eviction notice.

She revealed that some developers were previously warned to halt construction but proceeded anyway. Ocloo questioned whether some encroachments were conducted with the required permits. In a Facebook post, the minister called on affected residents to assist the team carrying out the operation. "These actions are vital to safeguard lives, property, and communities as we take proactive measures to reduce flooding in the near future," she stated.

"I urge all affected residents and stakeholders to cooperate with the exercise as we take decisive steps towards building safer and more resilient communities across Greater Accra." The action is part of a larger initiative by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and other state agencies to reclaim waterways, eliminate unauthorized structures, and enhance flood resilience throughout the region.

Officials intend to continue the operation at Laboma Beach as they strive to restore the lagoon's buffer zone.
