2027 Hajj: Lagos demands more slots

The Lagos State Government is requesting an increase in the number of Hajj slots allocated to Lagos for the 2027 pilgrimage, citing the growing number of residents who wish to participate in the annual Holy Journey to Saudi Arabia. Commissioner for Home Affairs Ibrahim Layode addressed NAHCON’s pre-2027 Hajj assessment team, expressing concern that the current allocation of 1,224 slots is insufficient.

He emphasized that Lagos has consistently excelled in Hajj operations, with his predecessor airlifting 3,661 pilgrims in 2023 alone, and his administration airlifting 1,600 in 2026, projecting at least 2,000 intending pilgrims for 2027. Layode appealed to NAHCON to reconsider the allocation and allocate additional slots to Lagos.

Concerning the 2026 Hajj, Layode criticized the substandard conditions of tents and facilities at Arafat, which he linked to health issues among pilgrims. He also raised concerns about the inadequate space and restroom facilities on Flynas Airline flights, causing discomfort for Lagos pilgrims. Layode suggested that states be allowed to set up clinic spaces within hotels for their pilgrims, as well as facilitate the smooth transportation of state-procured medications.

He urged NAHCON to maintain the existing luggage arrangement for pilgrims. Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi, NAHCON’s Commissioner of Operations, informed Lagos that Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 has led to increased private-sector involvement in Hajj operations, with the government primarily focusing on regulation and supervision.

Elegushi praised Lagos for its commitment to pilgrims' welfare since President Tinubu's tenure as Governor and urged the government to preserve the tradition while continuing to improve welfare programs for future Hajj operations.
