Zambry meets students, stakeholders over new law replacing Auku

KUALA LUMPUR: Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir met with student representatives to initiate the process of drafting a new law to replace the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (Auku). Zambry disclosed that he has also engaged in conversations with various stakeholders, including academics, university administrators, and other relevant parties, to ensure their perspectives are incorporated into the new legislation.

He emphasized that he has conducted numerous meetings with individuals from the academic community, administrators, and entities outside Category A (universities), and plans to meet additional groups in the coming days.

Zambry assured that student groups, including student representative councils, have been consulted. He mentioned that he has already spoken with student representative councils and has directed the national student representative council, representing universities across the country, to conduct their own discussions, including with groups that may hold differing views. Zambry aims to compile all these opinions to create a comprehensive Act that reflects a wide range of perspectives.

Recognizing the need to anticipate future developments, Zambry highlighted that Auku was enacted 54 years ago and that the legislation must be forward-looking. He stated that the government must plan for the future when drafting the new law, considering the current legal framework and creating an expansive Act. The new legislation will encompass broader aspects of higher education, such as the establishment and governance of universities, as well as matters concerning students.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on August 15 that Auku would be repealed to grant students more freedom and democratic space.
