Xi Jinping's Hongqi N701 in Delhi: All you need to know about his armoured limousine

Chinese President Xi Jinping commenced a two-day visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, marking his first trip to the nation in seven years. Alongside him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other high-ranking officials are present. Among the delegation is Cai Qi, a member of the CPC's Political Bureau, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The focus of attention is not only Jinping's visit but also the security measures surrounding him. Security motorcades for world leaders often serve as a display of strength during foreign visits. The Chinese president's vehicle, the Hongqi N701, has garnered significant attention. This heavily armored, exclusive state limousine, built by China's oldest passenger car manufacturer, FAW Group's Hongqi, is designed to withstand gunfire, chemical attacks, and explosive threats.

Reports suggest the N701 was introduced around 2022, with FAW Group planning to produce only about 50 units over a decade, exclusively for high-level state functions and official leadership. Although the government does not disclose detailed schematics, multiple sources indicate comprehensive defense systems. These vehicles typically weigh over 3-5 metric tonnes due to ballistic reinforcement.

The N701 is reportedly powered by either a 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine producing around 408 horsepower or a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 paired with a hybrid electric powertrain, developed in-house by FAW.

Unlike the US's Cadillac One or Russia's Aurus Senat, the Hongqi N701 represents a significant step in Chinese automotive diplomacy. It combines national pride, luxury, and defensive engineering, symbolizing China's commitment to safeguarding its head of state.
