Larry Hoover, a prominent figure in Chicago’s Gangster Disciples organization, has recently resurfaced in discussions surrounding the city’s rap scene after connections were drawn between him and the family history of rapper Lil Durk. Hoover, known as the “GOAT of Chicago,” was one of the most recognized figures in the Gangster Disciples and played a significant role in the organization's growth on Chicago’s South Side during the late twentieth century.

In August 2022, Lil Durk, a leading artist from Chicago’s drill movement, faced accusations of planning a murder-for-hire scheme against rapper Quando Rondo. The case concluded on September 8, with the jury at the Los Angeles courthouse ultimately finding Lil Durk not guilty after three days of deliberation. Following the verdict, some users on X social media platform compared Lil Durk’s influence to that of Larry Hoover’s in the Chicago hip-hop scene, with one comparing Durk to the “GOAT of Chicago.”

Larry Hoover’s criminal activities extended beyond his leadership of the Gangster Disciples. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Hoover moved to Chicago as a child and became involved in gang activity during his teenage years. He eventually helped build the Gangster Disciples into a powerful criminal network known for involvement in drug trafficking and violence.

Hoover received six life sentences in 1997 after a federal conviction for drug conspiracy, extortion, and continuing criminal enterprise. Despite his conviction, he reportedly continued directing the Gangster Disciples’ activities from prison.

Hoover’s legacy and influence in Chicago’s underworld have been a topic of discussion among some rap artists. Lil Durk, whose father, Devontay “Big Durk” Banks, allegedly had a relationship with Hoover during the early 1990s, has referenced Larry Hoover in his music and expressed respect for him. However, claims about Big Durk’s interactions with Hoover remain unconfirmed.
