UNC takes down ETSU 35-3 to improve to 2-0

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - September 12, 2026 - The North Carolina Tar Heels opened their home season with a dominant 35-3 victory over East Tennessee State Buccaneers, improving their record to an impressive 2-0. Although ETSU demonstrated determination throughout the game, the Tar Heels managed to outmatch them from start to finish.

The first quarter saw the Tar Heels struggle to sustain drives, dropping two passes thrown by quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. Nevertheless, they quickly bounced back with an interception by Jaylen McGill, which led to an immediate touchdown. Quarterback Jelani Thurman contributed to the drive by catching a 24-yard touchdown pass.

The Buccaneers' second drive managed to chip away at UNC's defense but ultimately fell short, resulting in a punt. UNC continued their dominance in the second quarter, with Edwards connecting with Benjamin Hall for a 26-yard touchdown. Demon June scored another touchdown for ETSU early in the second half, but the Heels continued their strong performance with a 35-0 halftime total.

The second half of the game saw a brief exchange of points, including a garbage time field goal by ETSU. However, the Heels maintained their lead, finishing the game without conceding a touchdown. While the offense impressed with their five touchdowns, the defense's performance was somewhat underwhelming, with ETSU controlling possession for 33:44 of the game. Despite this, the Tar Heels' victory sets them up well for their upcoming matchup against Clemson in Death Valley.
