Trump says he could settle UK-Argentina dispute over Malvinas

US President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday that he could potentially resolve the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands if requested. During a meeting with Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump stated, "I'm sure I'll be called into that potential disaster," implying his willingness to mediate if asked. However, he cast doubt on whether the British government would have the resources to protect the islands if necessary.

Trump questioned the UK's ability to handle issues related to immigration, energy, and other matters while claiming the islands. He also expressed uncertainty about the UK's willingness to deploy forces to the islands, which are located far away and require weeks to reach by boat.

The dispute over the South Atlantic islands has recently escalated as Argentina's President Javier Milei has intensified efforts to claim the territory. Milei has threatened sanctions on oil companies operating in the region as part of his claims. The UK Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, reaffirmed the UK's commitment to maintaining control over the islands, emphasizing that the UK's stance remains unwavering.

Trump has previously hinted at potentially altering the US's neutral position on the islands' sovereignty and suggested that he would not interfere in the event of a conflict. His comments have been met with criticism, as the UK has previously sought US military bases to aid in potential attacks on Iran. In contrast, Milei has enjoyed a positive relationship with Trump, whose populist policies align with those championed by the US president and his allies.
