Trump jets to Ireland for golf tournament, PM talks

Donald Trump touched down in Ireland on Saturday for a two-day visit that blends diplomacy and golf, amid a massive security operation. At least 4,000 police and other personnel, including snipers, have been deployed for the trip, dubbed one of Ireland's largest security operations. Trump emphasized that the trip would involve numerous meetings with European leaders and others, promising an "interesting time."

Protesters are planning to rally in Dublin against Trump, who will hold separate meetings with Ireland's Prime Minister Michael Martin and President Catherine Connolly. The president, known for his passion for golf, may even award the trophy at his luxury resort in Doonbeg, where the Irish Open tournament is taking place.

A US history professor at Trinity College Dublin, Daniel Geary, suggested that Trump views little distinction between his private interests and his role as president. The 80-year-old billionaire has recently promoted his family's golf business extensively since returning to the White House, including hosting leaders from the UK and EU at his resorts in Scotland and Scotland.

The security operation for Trump's visit is reportedly costing Ireland 20 million euros ($23 million), while the country is already managing a massive policing operation for its six-month presidency of the EU. The golf tournament in Doonbeg attracts an estimated 40,000 fans, with world number two Rory McIlroy among the participants. While McIlroy acknowledged that the tournament will feel different with Trump present, he emphasized that the players will remain focused on the game.
