Train derails in France and injures 44 as authorities investigate possible sabotage

A passenger train carrying 186 people derailed in northern France on Friday, resulting in at least 44 injuries, one of which was serious, according to officials. The incident occurred between the Normandy region cities of Rouen and Caen, with the train running at around 7:45 pm. Witnesses reported sudden jolts, with one describing the scene as shocking, as windows partially shattered and stones from the track entered the carriage. The 18-year-old woman who was critically injured was evacuated from the train.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot reported on social media X that a mass-casualty response plan was activated, mobilizing 130 firefighters, five medical teams, and 80 vehicles. Local authorities confirmed that the incident took place at around 7:45 pm. Tests for drugs and alcohol on the train driver returned negative results.

The train company SNCF Reseau, responsible for the French rail network, stated that traffic has been suspended, and power to the tracks was cut in order to enable emergency services to intervene. Their priority is to care for the injured passengers and restore safe operating conditions. The accident is currently under investigation by both the police and rail authorities.
