The promise Elkann made at Monza four years ago that now defines Vasseur's future at Ferrari

In September 2022, Ferrari chairman John Elkann expressed confidence that the team would secure a constructors' and drivers' championship between now and 2026 during an interview with Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport. At that time, Mattia Binotto was the team principal, months before Fred Vasseur joined Ferrari. Elkann believed Charles Leclerc to be the frontrunner for a world title, which had last been won by Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.

Ferrari was viewed as Red Bull's closest challenger, and there was a sense of optimism despite a campaign marred by errors. However, as the 2026 season progresses, the fulfillment of Elkann's promise appears challenging. Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's best-placed driver, currently sits third with 191 points, 76 points behind the championship leader.

Leclerc is fifth with 155 points. Mercedes remains ahead of Ferrari by 122 points in the constructors' standings. The new regulatory cycle, intended to offer Ferrari a reset, has instead solidified Mercedes' position as the benchmark team, setting the pace throughout the season. The pressure on Vasseur is heightened as he inherited Elkann's championship horizon, rather than setting it himself.

Despite not being a deadline specifically imposed on him, it now inevitably influences how his tenure is assessed. Vasseur's contract, renewed in July 2025, runs until the end of 2027, but Elkann, the executive chairman, will make the final decision on his future when that time comes.
