Thai police probe possible third-party links in temple fund case

Bangkok, 12 September 2026 — Thai police are probing potential involvement of third parties in a financial misconduct case involving former monk Atichot Thamwaro, also known as former abbot Luang Por Choti, and a woman identified as "Ae". The investigation, initiated by the Crime Suppression Division, centres on financial transactions exceeding 215 million baht.

Police Major General Phatthanasak Bupphasuwann disclosed that the probe is examining two aspects: the diversion of temple funds by the ex-monk and tracing money related to possible accomplices. Evidence includes donation certificates, amulet issuance certificates, and contributions for temple renovations, all totalling over 215 million baht.

Authorities suspect one or two third parties may be implicated, though their identities remain unconfirmed. It is unclear whether these suspects are laywomen or monks, as investigators continue to gather evidence. Relevant documents were forwarded to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) for further scrutiny. The investigation aims to trace the flow of funds to uncover any connections between the alleged financial misconduct and other individuals who could face legal consequences.
