Textile mogul, another ordered to enter defence over attack on ex-judge

Kuala Lumpur's sessions court has ordered two individuals to commence their defence against charges of abetting an attack on former judge Jagjit Singh. The prosecution has established a prima facie case against Pavitar Singh, owner of Gulati’s Silk House, and Nor Imran Nordin. The assault occurred on October 19, 2023, near Solaris Dutamas, allegedly stemming from a family feud.

The attackers entered Singh's law office at Publika shopping centre under pretense, intending to seek legal representation for themselves. Two lawyers were assaulted during the incident, while Singh was severely injured by a screwdriver. The offence, under Sections 109 and 326 of the Penal Code, carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, along with a fine or whipping.

Shahrulnizam Maimun and Asyraf Sharin, who were initially sentenced to two years and a cane whipping for their roles in the attack, had their terms extended to seven years following a prosecution appeal. The court has granted Pavitar and Imran seven days to begin their defence, with Wafa Zainal Abidin prosecuting and Jacky Loi and Lim Chen Chow representing Pavitar, with Amer Aizat Shamsuddin and counsel N Sivananthan and Jasmine Cheong supporting Imran.
