Study Finds New Eye Drops to Improve Night Vision

A new treatment for poor night vision, developed by Opus Genetics, has shown promising results in two late-stage studies. In the first trial, 145 patients with vision issues in low-light conditions and symptoms like glare, halos, and starbursts were tested. These patients received either a 0.75% phentolamine ophthalmic solution or a placebo for either eight or 15 days.

After just eight days, 13% of the treatment group showed improvement, compared to only 3% of the placebo group. By day 15, this improvement rate increased to 21% among those using the eye drops, while the placebo group remained at 3%.

The eye drops were found to work by targeting a muscle in the iris, causing moderate pupil constriction for up to 20 hours. This could potentially help improve night vision, especially for those who have experienced vision problems after procedures like LASIK surgery. In the second Phase III trial, researchers reported early promising results, noting that patients experienced better visibility under oncoming headlights and improved vision during dawn or dusk glare.

The US Food and Drug Administration has granted Fast Track designation to these eye drops, which could expedite the approval process.
