Stakeholder urges intervention over river blindness in Taraba community

Yunusa Ahmed Danjuma, a stakeholder from Ardo-Kola Local Government Area in Taraba State, has implored local and state political leaders to take immediate action against the escalating burden of onchocerciasis, more commonly known as river blindness, in Murbai community. Danjuma's call to action was made in an open letter addressed to key officials including the council's Executive Chairman, Umar Bello Badawaire, and two state assembly members.

The letter also invited a wider circle of community leaders to join efforts in addressing the health crisis.

Onchocerciasis, Danjuma explained, has taken a significant toll on residents, leading to blindness, loss of livelihoods, and diminished dignity. The condition is preventable and treatable, yet the affected communities, heavily reliant on their environment and rivers for their livelihoods, have seen no adequate intervention. Danjuma questioned the lack of action, urging elected representatives to personally inspect the area to gauge the gravity of the situation.

He reminded these leaders that their constituents placed trust in them to safeguard their welfare, making the people's wellbeing their top priority.

Danjuma's appeal also extends to elders, youth leaders, intellectuals, and others across Ardo-Kola, including those abroad, urging them to raise awareness and pool resources to tackle the issue. He proposed several urgent measures, such as the deployment of emergency healthcare teams, the establishment of medical relief centres for eye care and rehabilitation, and an on-the-ground assessment of the health crisis.

The stakeholder's appeal underscores the interconnectedness of community health with overall constituency welfare, emphasizing that political leadership lasts only temporarily, while the impact of their decisions will linger with the people.
