Sarawak dialysis patient’s rescue shows why the Flying Doctor Service matters

On September 12, the Flying Doctor Service once again demonstrated its vital role in remote Sarawak communities, as the timely evacuation of a dialysis patient illustrates. Renai Iwat, a patient who requires treatment three times a week, found herself in a precarious situation when a helicopter crash occurred just 200 meters from her home in Long Lellang.

With four medical personnel and a pilot losing their lives in the tragedy, the nearby STOLport was closed, leaving Renai with no choice but to return to Miri Hospital to continue her essential medical care.

Upon hearing the distressing news, Renai's family immediately sought assistance from authorities to facilitate her evacuation. The small family was deeply grateful to Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala, Miri Division Resident Tuan Galong Luang, and Bomba for making her rescue possible.

Gerawat had personally advocated for Renai's urgent medical evacuation due to her stringent dialysis schedule, ensuring that suitable arrangements were made for her safe return to Miri.

The family also expressed their appreciation to Dr. P Raviwharmman Packierisamy, the head of the Miri Health Department, and the Bomba director for their support and approval of the evacuation. They particularly praised the helicopter captain and crew for their swift and successful deployment of a Bomba helicopter to transport Renai back to Miri Hospital.

Renai, who is the widow of the late Pemanca Freddy Abun, a dedicated member of the Kelabit community for over five years, now faces the emotional and physical challenges of her return to treatment. Her ordeal serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of air medical services in remote areas of Sarawak, where access to healthcare can depend on the ability to travel by air.

The family's gratitude and heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the crash underscore the life-saving nature of the Flying Doctor Service. For Renai, her safe evacuation is a testament that in the remote corners of Sarawak, air medical services are not a luxury but a lifeline.
