SAFA elections poised to shape the future of South African football

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is set to hold an electoral congress that could significantly impact the future of football in the country. On Saturday, the presidential election will take place, with incumbent Danny Jordaan seeking his fourth term. Running against him is businessman Sandile Zungu. Zungu's supporters have accused SAFA of employing underhanded tactics to ensure Jordaan's re-election.

However, the Football Transformation Forum, which backs Jordaan, maintains that he has secured enough votes legitimately. Tankiso Modipa, chair of the forum, stated, "I think people are just seeing ghosts, because from our side, our regions are not capable of intimidating anyone, and our regions are very clear. They are focusing on their own race, focusing on their own candidate, that they know they’re the majority.

There’s no need for anyone in their camp, which is the FTF camp; they cannot intimidate anyone. We have the majority." Meanwhile, the lobby group Save Our SAFA has called for change within the national football governing body, alleging that some regions held elections at the last minute to attend the electoral congress in support of Jordaan.

Phil Mogodi, president of SAFA's Gauteng region, has expressed support for calls for change, emphasizing the need for good leadership in football.
