Policeman interdicted over death of law student in hit-and-run on Tema Motorway

The Ghana Police Service has identified and taken action against General Corporal Robert Koranteng in relation to the fatal hit-and-run incident on the Tema Motorway that claimed the life of 23-year-old law student Ivan Baidoo. This development followed a preliminary investigation sparked by a viral video circulating on social media platforms.

Ivan, a second-year law student, lost his life in the accident that occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, around 4 p.m., as reported by his family in a petition submitted to the Police. According to the family's petition, Ivan had summoned a YANGO ride and boarded a motorbike with the registration number M 26-AB 384, which was en route from Old Ashongman to East Legon.

The motorbike's driver, Samuel Arthur Wesley, informed Airport Police Station investigators that an officer from a police patrol team, also riding a motorbike, had pursued him from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway. Wesley claimed that the officer collided with their motorbike from behind, causing both himself and Ivan to fall off their bikes.

On September 12, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that General Corporal Koranteng had been identified as being involved in the incident and had been temporarily removed from active duty pending further investigation. The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently working diligently to uncover the complete circumstances surrounding Ivan Baidoo's death.

Additionally, the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has been tasked with assessing General Corporal Koranteng's conduct as it pertains to the incident. Both investigations aim to determine the events that led to Ivan's death and to ascertain whether the officer's actions adhered to the professional standards and regulations of the Ghana Police Service.
