Ozempic, Wegovy introduced in Kenya as diabetes, obesity burden grows

Novo Nordisk has introduced Ozempic and Wegovy to Kenyan patients, drawing attention to the growing burden of cardio-metabolic health issues in the country, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. The launch in Nairobi on Saturday brought together healthcare professionals, experts, and policymakers to discuss the challenges and advancements in diabetes and obesity care, as well as the role of partnerships and innovation in meeting unmet healthcare needs in Kenya and Africa.

Consultant physician and endocrinologist Dr. Roseline Ngugi emphasized the under-recognized prevalence of diabetes in Kenya, noting that a significant proportion of people living with the condition remain unaware of their diagnosis. She stressed the importance of early screening, diagnosis, and a more integrated approach to preventing and managing interconnected cardio-metabolic conditions, which are increasingly affecting people of all ages, including children.

While the introduction of additional treatment options is a welcome development, speakers highlighted the importance of affordability and accessibility, with the medicines being offered at a reduced price in Kenya. Health insurers, government, and other stakeholders were urged to consider the long-term cost implications of appropriate management of chronic conditions.

The scientific discussion also addressed the broader context of changing lifestyles, urbanization, demographic shifts, and gaps in screening and diagnosis that are reshaping the burden of non-communicable diseases in Africa. Danish Ambassador to Kenya, Stephan Schønemann, highlighted the potential for cooperation between Denmark and Kenya in healthcare, innovation, and knowledge exchange to strengthen healthcare systems and provide more options for people living with diabetes.
